Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

Two years after his breakthrough with JAWS, Steven Spielberg stood nearly 30 years of tradition on its head and virtually re-invented the science-fiction cinema with this one-of-a-kind masterwork which arrived just six months after the release of STAR WARS. Richard Dreyfuss stars as an Indiana "every man" who's become obsessed with images and sightings, slowly realizing that, as the tagline went, We Are Not Alone. The subtle, realistic use of special effects leads the viewer slowly and surely to the breath-taking climax at Devil's Tower, Wyoming. Francois Truffaut is magnificent as the kindly UFO expert, along with Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban and young, wide-eyed Cary Guffey. John Williams contributes another memorable score, and the list of cinematographers and visual effects people reads more like a Who's Who. Spielberg reworked the film into The Special Edition in 1980, then again in 1997 as the definitive Director's Cut.
