The life of Mahatma Gandhi is the subject of Sir Richard Attenborough's highly praised epic film, which won eight Oscars®, including Best Picture, Director and Actor for Ben Kingsley's incredible performance as the great leader. Gandhi's rise to power is traced from its beginnings when, as an educated attorney, he is imprisoned for disobeying an apartheid law in South Africa, to the command he ultimately had over thousands of Indians who followed his example of non-violent civil disobedience. Gandhi's role in elevating the people of India profoundly influenced Britain's decision to leave India, and his humanitarian efforts resonated around the world. Attenborough shot the film in India, using more than 400,000 native extras in the funeral scene. The excellent supporting cast includes Sir John Gielgud, Candice Bergen, Athol Fugard, Edward Fox, and Martin Sheen in a small but admirable performance as the New York Times journalist who helped bring Gandhi's message to the rest of the world.
