Stanley Kramer directed this outstanding comedy-drama and became one of the great filmmaker's towering achievements. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn teamed for the last time to play a San Francisco couple whose liberal beliefs are tested when their only daughter (Katharine Houghton, Hepburn's real-life niece) comes home with her fiancé, a distinguished, Nobel-nominated physician played by Sidney Poitier, and announces they're leaving for Africa that night, seeking her parents' blessing. It was Tracy's last film and he passed away days after completing his memorable final monologue. Earning Hepburn the second of her four Oscars®, William Rose also won for his screenplay, and the film received nine nominations in all.
