Yearning to be a mother, famed Broadway actress Elisabeth Risdon (Marlene Dietrich) stumbles onto the answer to her dreams when she finds an abandoned baby. With her lack of a suitable husband standing in the way of raising the child as her own, Elisabeth makes Dr. Corey McBain (Fed MacMurray) an irresistible offer - she'll fund his research and allow him to give up his medical practice if he'll agree to a marriage of convenience. When McBain's ex-wife (Arline Judge) shows up looking for money, Elisabeth spirits the baby away to Boston. But when the child falls ill and McBain is called on to perform life-saving surgery, he and Elisabeth realize that their arrangement has blossomed into true love.
