Oliver!

Oliver!

One of the last of the great Broadway-to-Hollywood musicals (and the last one to win a Best Picture Oscar®) this deft reworking of Dickens' "Oliver Twist" about an orphan who is recruited into a gang of youthful pickpockets ruled by the deliciously evil Fagin, proved as big a hit on the screen as it did on the stage. Newcomers Mark Lester and Jack Wild were perfect as young Oliver and the Artful Dodger, while the grown-up roles were ably filled by Ron Moody (Fagin), Oliver Reed (Bill Sykes), and Shani Wallis (Nancy) along with Harry Secombe and Hugh Griffith. The film won six Academy Awards® in all, including one for director Carol Reed, and a special one to choreographer Onna White. Lionel Bart's memorable score includes the hits "Consider Yourself" and "As Long As He Needs Me," as well as "I'm Reviewing the Situation," "Be Back Soon," and "You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two."
