Old-fashioned romance reached its zenith in this film starring Barbra Streisand as the lovable Jewish political activist, and Robert Redford as the Gentile hunk she loves. Set over a number of years from the late 1930's to the mid-50's, taking in everything from WWII to the Blacklist, it chronicles their ups and downs in tearjerker fashion, though it's not without humor. Sydney Pollack directed this Ray Stark production with his usual polish and grace. Marvin Hamlisch won two of his three Oscars® that year for his original score and title song, along with lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and it received four other nominations, including Best Actress. Also in the cast are Bradford Dillman, Lois Chiles, Patrick O'Neal, Viveca Lindfors, Murray Hamilton, Sally Kirkland, and in his very first film, James Woods.
