A knighted physician with an impeccable record of service in England, the Polish-born Dr. Adam Kelno (Anthony Hopkins) has brought a libel suit against best-selling American author Abe Cady (Ben Gazzara), whose recent novel accused him of perpetrating almost unimaginable atrocities upon prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp at Jadwiga. Obsessed with proving his innocence, and with accusations from the publication of Cady's book intruding on his otherwise peaceful life, Dr. Kelno is resolved to settle the matter, once and for all.
